In A Fish Out of Water, Whatever to Do?, Jade Verrigni delivers a beautifully sensitive and timely children’s book that meets young readers right where they are—often adrift in a confusing sea of overwhelming emotions and sensations. This is not just a story. It is a lifeline—cast lovingly toward children who may be struggling with emotional regulation or sensory processing differences. Through lyrical storytelling and poignant watercolor illustrations, Verrigni invites us into the inner world of children who often feel out of place in the current of everyday life. With gentle metaphor and deeply human insight, the book not only helps children feel seen and accepted, but also empowers them to see their uniqueness as strength, not strangeness. What sets this book apart is its dual resonance: it speaks with kindness to children while also delivering a powerful message to the grown-ups who care for them—parents, teachers, counselors, and community members. It reminds us that what may appear as behavioral challenges on the surface are often quiet cries for understanding. And most importantly, it affirms that unconditional love and support are the life vests every child deserves. Verrigni’s narrative is laced with compassion and hope. She doesn’t promise a perfect journey, but she does promise that the journey is not meant to be taken alone. And in doing so, she turns a children’s book into a tool for healing, dialogue, and deep empathy. This book should be in every home, every classroom, and every library. It is a must-read for the times we live in—a small but mighty masterpiece that reminds us all: everyone belongs, even if they swim a little differently.
